How to get in the right mindset to exercise regularly

Let’s be honest. Getting in that right mood to go the gym is HARD. After a hard day of work it is easy to slip onto that comfy couch and hang. Or worse, to binge watch and binge eat. Going to the gym and to be more active is a difficult resolution to keep. Many even forgot it after waking up the day after you set that goal. However, once in that goal-mode, exercise will come naturally to you and you will even enjoy it!

Here are five simple steps in order to get into the right mindset to work out regularly. Remember, exercise not only makes you look better, but it makes you feel better, as well.

1. Set realistic Goals and Expectations

Before you start your plans to work out. Try setting goals that are easy to achieve. Don’t overwhelm yourself with hard physical goals or one huge goal that needs a lot of work and only creates a mental meltdown. If you consider going to a gym, ask your instructor to set a realistic goal. When deciding to join a gym, start easy by telling yourself to go once a week. Once you catch that gym-virus you’ll be going more often, but to start is the hardest part.

2. Find a (fanatic) Fitness buddy

When finding a gym buddy, going to the fitness center is easier and more motivating. You could even start with a cup of coffee when arriving at the gym, so you can also use gym-time to catch up and to have some quality time together. Your partner in crime can also support you and motivate you during the exercise. Give each other that extra push and be proud of your time at the gym, together!

3. Baby steps

Trying to be more active is also in the little things. Park your car a bit further down the parking lot, so you’ll walk more. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Play along with the kids. Take your dog for a long walk. Go for an after-dinner walk. Stretch when you wake up. You don’t always have to make things big!

4. Eat healthier

If you find eating healthy extremely hard. Try eating a little bit healthier. With truly an emphasize on the little. Don’t cut all bad carbs at once but skip one bad habit at a time. Skip the sugar in your tea. Eat whole wheat instead of white bread for breakfast. Eat an apple daily instead of a candy bar daily. Drink water instead of apple juice. Eat plain yoghurt with fruit instead of Yoplait yoghurt. Order a chicken wrap instead of a burger or ditch the fries when going to the drive through. Those improvements alone are one to be proud of already! If you master one bad habit and turned it into a healthy one, cross of that next bad habit.

5. Put on your sports wear

What also helps is to put on your gym clothes in the morning, and then decide to go to the gym or to be active, instead of the other way around. It also helps if you have super cute and comfy workout clothes, that you truly WANT to wear.

When beginning your new workout routine, it is easy to start with a negative attitude towards the exercise. Remind yourself that exercising can be fun, and it feels awesomely rewarding afterwards. Focus on that after feeling when you have to get ready for the gym and are doing your round of exercises. Your body is your temple, and you are worth taking care of.

Just. Do. It!
